Nkrumah Circle hawkers vow to vote against Mahama

90471101Some hawkers who ply their trade around the refurbished Kwame Nkrumah Circle(now Interchange) in Accra have poured out their frustration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly after officials from the Assembly intensified moves to ward them off in an operation Wednesday.

The AMA has asked the hawkers to relocate or have their structures demolished.

The directive comes after President John Mahama inaugurated the three-tier interchange project which cost about 74 million euros on Monday.

But even before the project was commissioned hawkers had taken over the pedestrian walkways and were seen trading their wares indiscriminately within the new Interchange spot.

Several of the angry hawkers who spoke to Kasapa 102.5 FM said the move taken against them won’t favour Mahama’s second term bid in the December polls despite the huge project he’s set in the heart of the city.

“Mahama wants us to go back to our hometown. You have not even finished the pavements why then do you inaugurate the project? Ahead of the commissioning Monday we’ve been completely barred from operating around. No matter what, this project can’t be compared to the city of Dubai as they claim.”
