Sports Journalist blasts ‘hypocritical’ Asamoah Gyan for criticizing Black Stars selection

Astute sports journalist, Ibrahim Babaginda has vented his spleen at the former captain of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan over his public criticism of the Black Stars’ technical team following the decision to exclude Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru from the Ghana squad to face Nigeria.

The Black Stars interim coach, Otto Addo invited six midfielders in his official 27-man squad for the World Cup Playoff against Nigeria with the exclusion of Majeed Ashimeru.

In a post on his Twitter, the all-time Ghana goalscorer labelled the exclusion of Majeed as nonsense.

According to Gyan, apart from Thomas Partey, Majeed is better than the rest of the midfielders invited looking at his current form.

Reacting to Asamoah Gyan’s criticism as a panelist on Hot Focal Sports show hosted by Stonchist D’Blakk Soulja on Accra-based Hot 93.9FM, Babaginda without mincing words stated,”What the former Captain of the Black Stars said is totally needless…Majeed Ashimeru is a fine player and a Ghanaian who features week-in week-out for his team but from Avram Grants, Kwesi Appiah to CK Akonnor eras, Majeed Ashimeru was given numerous opportunities but Asamoah Gyan should tell me if Majeed was able to carry the Black Stars on his shoulders in one of those call-ups?”

The outspoken journalist, who is also an ECG staff member, added that,” If Ashimeru was not invited and so what? When Gyan played the 2006 world cup qualifiers with Joetex Frimpong when Joefex Frimpong was dropped, did Asamoah Gyan come out to question why he (Joetex Frimpong) was dropped?”.

According to Babaginda, “Gyan should stop being hypocritical….I think his rant is just needless.”
