Accra, May 27, GNA – The Council of World Bishops has condemned the acid attack on Alhaji Adams Mahama, Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that claimed his life on May 21 in Bolgatanga.

Archbishop Dr George Slezer Ofori-Atta, Presiding Archbishop of the Council of World Bishops and the International Council for Clergy said the act was un-Ghanaian and degraded the sacredness of human dignity and life.

‘We abhor and condemn unequivocally this dastard, wicked, dehumanising and barbaric attack on a fellow human being, reducing him to less than an animal in death,’ he said in a statement issued by the council in Accra and copied to Ghana News Agency.

It said the rate at which such acts are going in the society is highly unacceptable, adding: ‘Accommodation and tolerance for each other’s views are necessary virtues worthy of inculcation into and practise in this democratic dispensation of ours.’

The statement said the issue must not be treated as a party matter, as the law takes its full course; and ‘justice must be seen to be served and actually served’.

‘The Presiding Archbishop…and the International Council For Clergy together with the entire membership of the two Ecclesiastical bodies, hereby console the wife and the Children of Alhaji Adams Mahama.

‘Furthermore, to his political family, the NPP, we say, may the LORD keep your hearts together in an orderly manner, devoid of any schism. And to the Nation, be comforted, forgive each other on a daily bases. Let us love each other, as we make our democracy a cherished one in a bid of making our beloved country Ghana, a better place to live.’
