Belgium’s Finance Department is granting households, businesses and independent contractors extra time to pay their taxes, Finance Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) announced on Thursday.

“Many Belgian businesses are directly affected by the fight against the Coronavirus. The deadline extensions give them an immediate financial buffer of 4.5 billion euros to cushion the shock of this difficult period,” the minister explained.

He added that the Belgian Government was also granting families “a two-month extension of the deadline for filing personal income taxes” to help tide them over.

The two-month extension means businesses and individuals can pay their VAT and withholding taxes later without risking late fees or fines. If the extension is not enough, they will be able agree on additional modalities of payment with the Finance Department. These could include payment plans and late-fee waivers.

The deadlines for paying corporate taxes, personal income taxes, taxes on legal entities, and non-resident taxes are all covered by the two-month extension, De Croo explained.
