Only 77 people were newly admitted to hospital with the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in the past 24 hours, the second-lowest number since counting started on March 15, the Federal Public Health Service said on Sunday.

389 additional people tested positive for virus. Of that number, 187 were from Flanders, 107 from Wallonia and 73 from Brussels. The FPS does not yet have further information on the place of residence of 22 other people.

The total number of confirmed infections since the epidemic started now stands at 49,906.

The total reflects all people in Belgium who have been infected, and includes confirmed active cases as well as patients who have since recovered, or died from the consequences of the virus.

The total number of people currently in hospital is now 3,056, including 77 admitted in the last 24 hours. On the first day of counting in March the number of admissions was 71, rising to 90 on March 16. They have never been so low as today since then.

The drop in the number of hospital admissions is positive news, but it may prove to be a temporary reprieve, depending on what happens when the confinement restrictions are partially lifted from tomorrow, Monday May 4.

Of those still in hospital, 674 are in intensive care, 15 fewer than yesterday. Since the crisis started, a total of 12,309 patients have been discharged from hospital. 98 of those were in the past 24 hours.

79 new deaths have been reported, of which 44 occurred in hospitals, and were confirmed cases. 35 of the deaths were reported by the residential care centres, of which 86% were confirmed cases.

The total number of deaths in Belgium since the beginning of the pandemic is currently 7,844, of which 46% occurred in hospitals, 53% in a care home, 0.3% at home and 0.4% somewhere else.

The deaths in hospital are all confirmed cases of Covid-19. The deaths in care homes are 17% conformed by test, and 83% presumed by symptoms pre-mortem.
